Dining for Hours: Why a Comfortable Dining Chair Makes All the Difference
A dinner with friends can easily last three hours. That’s when you realize just how comfortable your dining chair is—and how different a chair that moves with you really is.
A comfortable dining chair makes all the difference when you’re sitting at the table for more than an hour. At that point, it’s no longer about how the chair feels at first, but whether it moves with you as you lean forward, lean back, or turn around. Stressless dining chairs do just that with the Balance&Glide™ system, at a seat height of 48 cm that’s perfect for a table measuring 74 to 75 cm.
A quick meal takes half an hour. A dinner with friends can easily last three hours: first the meal, then another glass of wine, dessert, coffee, and that one conversation no one wants to end. It’s on those very evenings that you realize just how comfortable—or uncomfortable—your dining room chairs are. And no one wants the chair to be the reason the evening comes to an end.
Why do you spend more time at the table than you realize?
Because in most homes, the dining table is much more than just a place to eat. We have breakfast there, work from home, help the kids with their homework, play board games, and entertain guests. Add up all those moments, and you’ll soon find yourself spending many more hours in your dining room chairs than you might think.
On a typical Tuesday evening, a less-than-perfect chair hardly stands out. But on a four-hour Christmas Eve dinner, a birthday party, or a long Sunday lunch, it stands out all the more. Those are the moments when it’s worth choosing your chair carefully.

What do you notice when you sit in a regular chair for a long time?
After an hour, you’ll start to shift around. A chair with a fixed seat and backrest doesn’t follow your movements: if you lean forward to eat, you lose contact with the backrest; if you lean back, you slide forward and slump down. Your body then seeks out a new position on its own, and after a while, you’ll feel it in your lower back and buttocks.
It's not a matter of softness. A thicker cushion helps at first, but after an hour, it causes you to sink in even deeper. What helps is a chair that moves with the postures you naturally assume at the table.
How does a dining chair that moves with you work?
With Stressless dining chairs, the Balance&Glide™ system takes care of that. When you lean back, the seat slides forward and the backrest moves backward in a fixed ratio. This means you don’t slump, and your back remains supported—without any levers or buttons. When you lean forward again, the chair follows you back.
The seat shell is made of a sturdy polymer, the backrest of glass-fiber-reinforced polyamide, and the cold-molded foam retains its shape, even after years of use. Stressless offers a 10-year warranty on the Balance&Glide™ mechanism and the metal frame, in addition to the 2-year statutory warranty, in accordance with Stressless’s warranty terms.

When does a comfortable dining chair prove its worth?
During the times when you sit for the longest:
- a lavish Christmas dinner or New Year's dinner;
- a birthday or family celebration;
- a dinner with friends that runs late;
- a long Sunday lunch;
- a game night;
- A day working from home at the dining table.
At times like these, you want to focus on the conversation, the food, and the people around you—not on your chair. A good dining chair supports you throughout the evening without drawing attention to itself.
Swivel chairs, armrests, or a high back: what helps when dining for a long time?
All three, depending on where you're seated at the table. Making a few choices during long dinners makes a noticeable difference:
| Choice | How it affects long meals | At Stressless |
|---|---|---|
| Swivel base | You turn toward the person sitting next to you and stand up without pushing the chair back | D350 star base, 360° swivel, optional with auto-return |
| Armrests | Support for your arms while chatting and when getting up | Up to 69 to 70 cm tall; fits under a table that is 74 to 75 cm high |
| High back | Lean back until your shoulders are supported when you recline after eating | 105 cm tall in Mint, Laurel, and Vanilla |
| Enveloping Form | The feeling of sitting in a small armchair at the table | The Stressless Bay with its rounded shell |
If you like to sit for long periods and have the space, a high-back chair with armrests on a swivel base is the most comfortable combination. If your dining area is tight, it’s better to choose chairs without armrests and reserve the armrests for the end seats. You can find all the options side by side in our article , “The Ideal Dining Chair: What to Look For.”

Why do chairs and tables need to match?
Because even a chair that’s comfortable on its own can feel cramped if it’s not the right size for the table. Most dining tables are 74 to 75 cm high. With a seat height of 48 cm—as found on all Stressless dining chairs—there’s 26 to 27 cm between the seat and the tabletop: plenty of legroom, and your arms rest comfortably on the table.
So when choosing a new chair, always check how it works with the table. Is there enough legroom under the edge of the table? Can you easily slide forward? Do the armrests fit under the tabletop? Do the table legs get in the way where the chair is supposed to go? If you’re also looking for a new table, check out the Stressless tables and test the chair and table together.
Why is the best dining chair the one you forget about?
Because when you're at the table, you want to focus on the people around you, not on how you're sitting. If, after three hours, you still haven't thought about your chair, then you've chosen the right one. So when choosing, ask yourself these questions:
- How long do we usually stay here, and how long on holidays?
- What else do we use the dining table for, besides eating?
- Do we want it to be able to swivel, or would we prefer fixed legs?
- Which type of support do you prefer: high or low back, with or without armrests?
- Will the chair go well with our table and our decor?
Sometimes the difference between “we have to go” and “shall we have another cup of coffee?” comes down to nothing more than a comfortable chair. To find out why this applies to every chair in your home, read “Why Sitting Comfortably Is More Important Than You Think.”
Frequently Asked Questions About Comfortable Dining
A chair that fits your body and your table and moves with you as you change positions. Look for a seat height of about 48 cm for a table that’s 74 to 75 cm high, a backrest that supports your lower back, and a seat that isn’t too deep. A high back and armrests provide extra support when you’re lingering at the table after a meal.
Because you’re constantly changing your posture during dinner: leaning forward to eat, leaning back to talk, turning toward your neighbors. A chair with a fixed seat and back doesn’t adapt to these movements, so you start shifting around after an hour. A chair that moves with you keeps your back supported in every position.
Yes, they provide support for your arms while you’re chatting after a meal and help you get up. They do take up some space, though: a Stressless dining chair with armrests is 58 to 59 cm wide. The armrests are no more than 69 to 70 cm high, so they fit under a standard dining table that’s 74 to 75 cm high.
Yes, especially around a round table or in a smaller dining area. You can easily turn toward the person sitting next to you and stand up without pushing the chair back. With Stressless, the D350 base rotates 360 degrees; with the auto-return option, the chair automatically rotates back toward the table after you stand up.
Sit down at a table—not just anywhere in the store—and stay seated for at least ten minutes. Lean forward as if you were eating, lean back as if you were relaxing after a meal, and turn toward the person next to you. Pay attention to when you feel the urge to shift in your seat: the later that happens, the better the chair fits.
Working from home at the dining table every now and then is perfectly fine. The Mint, Laurel, Bay, and Vanilla models are also available as home office chairs on a star-base with five casters, offering the same adaptive seating comfort. For eight hours a day of intensive computer work, we recommend a full-featured ergonomic office chair.
