Ergonomics at the Table

Why do most dining room chairs become uncomfortable after an hour?

Because when you sit still in a chair with a fixed backrest, your back muscles stiffen, your intervertebral discs lose moisture, and a hip angle of 90° puts extra pressure on your lower back. Your body wants to relieve that pressure, and in a fixed chair, there’s only one way to do that: slump or shift your position.

Your body needs to move a little. Sitting still for long periods builds up tension in your back, and the only way to relieve that tension is by moving. That’s why walking is one of the best remedies for back pain. If you’re already prone to back problems, even one long dinner on a hard, rigid chair can cause hours or even days of back pain.

Many people choose a dining chair based on its appearance and only discover how it feels once they get it home. What you see online or in a store is purely visual and says nothing about comfort. A beautiful chair isn’t automatically a good chair. That’s why dynamic sitting and good posture should take precedence over design.

A dining chair that moves with you is therefore a good choice for anyone with back problems—and for anyone who likes to linger at the table.

How Do You Choose the Right Dining Chair? 5 Criteria

Our advisors ask every customer these five questions, no matter which brand you ultimately choose.

Criterion 1

What seat height do you need?

48 cm

A dining table is typically 75 cm high, with about 1 cm of leeway depending on the thickness of the tabletop. The ideal seat height is 48 cm to the seat surface, leaving about 27 cm between the seat and the tabletop. Because these measurements are standardized, it’s rare to find a table that’s too low or a chair that’s too high.

However, those standard sizes are actually too low for taller people. If you're tall, it's best to choose a slightly taller chair and table: about 5 cm is usually enough, but be sure to measure it out.

Criterion 2

High or low backrest?

Comfort or peace of mind

A high backrest offers the greatest seating comfort: it provides support higher up on your back, which you’ll notice when you linger at the table. It does take up more space, though.

A low backrest is less noticeable. It barely extends above the tabletop and doesn't obstruct the view, which is convenient in an open living space or a smaller dining room.

Criterion 3

With or without armrests?

Max. 70 cm high

Armrests provide more comfort; if you like to linger at the table, that makes a big difference. The armrests are 69 to 70 cm high at most—also a standardized size—so they fit under any standard dining table that’s 74 to 75 cm high.

Please note that built-in desks or work tables are often only 70 cm high.

Criterion 4

Leather or fabric?

Just as sustainable

Fabric and leather are both very durable. Fabric feels a bit stiffer: the chair is slightly stiffer and less supple. Leather is a living material and is just as durable as fabric, but it’s more susceptible to scratches from cat and dog claws.

Paloma and Velaro leather can certainly hold up to grandchildren. One condition: maintain the leather at least twice a year using a Stressless care kit. Dried-out leather absorbs moisture, including body moisture.

Criterion 5

How much space do you need per seat?

± 55 cm + 30 to 40 cm

The width varies by model: most dining chairs range from 50 to 58 cm in width, with a few exceptions on either end of that range. For Stressless, the range is from 44 to 59 cm.

Leave 30 to 40 cm of space behind the chair so you can stand up comfortably.

Who is the Mint the best choice for?

The Mint is the classic piece in the collection, recognizable by the horizontal stitching line on the backrest. It’s available with a high or low back, with or without armrests, in size L. With a width of 50 to 57 cm, it’s a good mid-size option. Choose the Mint if you’re looking for a chair that works just as well with an oak table in a classic interior as it does with a sleek, black table. Who is the Laurel best suited for?

Stressless calls the Laurel its bestseller. It is the slimmest model and the only one available in two sizes, M and L, with a width starting at 44 cm. This makes the Laurel the logical choice for shorter people, for a compact dining room, and for those who want to fit as many chairs as possible around a single table. Who is the Bay the best choice for?

The Bay has a rounded, enveloping shell shape that feels like a small armchair at the table. It’s available only with a low back, so it barely rises above the tabletop—ideal for an open living space where you want to keep the view unobstructed. At 50 to 59 cm, it’s the widest model. If you want a high backrest, the Bay isn’t the right choice. It’s also the most expensive model, starting at €539.

Who is the Vanilla the best choice for?

The Vanilla has a modern design with a backrest that widens toward the top. With a depth of 62 to 63 cm, it is the deepest model: you’ll have plenty of room to sit comfortably, which is nice when you’re sitting for long periods. It’s available with a high or low back, in size L. The Vanilla looks its best paired with a modern or round table. If the space behind your chairs is tight, be sure to factor in that extra depth. Why is a swivel chair so practical at the table?

You don't have to slide the chair back to get in or out, and you can easily turn toward the person sitting next to you. Plus, a swivel chair allows you to move around more than a traditional chair where you sit perfectly upright. This helps distribute the pressure more evenly, so you can sit comfortably for longer.

Does a Stressless dining chair recline automatically?

Not standard. The D350 base swivels freely. If you want the chair to always swivel neatly back toward the table after you stand up, choose the auto-return feature. That option costs about 70 euros per chair.

Are there dining chairs with wheels?

Yes, as a Home Office model with a star-shaped base and five wheels. It’s best not to place it on carpet—that creates too much resistance for it to roll smoothly. They make a nice addition to your desk or living room. Read more about how a Stressless can serve as an office chair.

What happens to a Stressless dining chair when you move?

When you lean back, the seat slides forward and the backrest moves backward. This happens in a fixed ratio, so you never slump and your seating depth remains the same. Your back stays supported, without having to prop up your lower back with a pillow.

Why is a backrest that moves with you healthier during long meals?

When you sit still in a chair, your back muscles and intervertebral discs are subjected to static stress and become stiff. Both muscles and intervertebral discs are “lubricated” by movement. Just as you warm up before exercising, your muscles stay active when the chair moves with you. This helps reduce the likelihood of stiffness and back pain.

Leather, Fabric & Colors

Which leather or fabric should you choose for a dining chair?

For Stressless dining chairs, you can choose from 3 types of leather (Batick, Paloma, and Velaro) in a total of 50 colors, and from 10 fabric collections in 71 colors. For durability and ease of care, our consultants recommend Paloma or Velaro.

Choosing leather is a very personal decision. That’s why you should feel the different leathers for yourself in the store and take some samples home. In addition to the large samples, we have compact samples from Stressless itself, which you can easily place next to your table and on the floor.

You can mix and match colors as you like—for example, four chairs in one color and two in another. There is no minimum order quantity.

This is the most heavily processed leather, with a uniform grain pattern throughout. This processing makes it extra durable, but it is the least soft and feels the least “leather-like.” So you’re sacrificing some comfort and softness.

Slightly thinner than Velaro, heavily treated, and at least as soft—similar to the soft seats in a luxury car. Thanks to its very uniform grain structure, Paloma has a very smooth appearance. Slightly more affordable than Velaro.

How do you care for a dining chair?

Clean leather and fabric with a damp cloth. If there’s been a minor accident, use the Stressless care kits. Treat leather at least twice a year with the leather care kit.

Allow about 55 cm of seat width per chair, plus some space between the chairs, so about 60 to 65 cm of table length per person. If the chairs have armrests, you'll need a little more space.

What should the seat height of a dining chair be?

Ideally, a dining chair should have a seat height of 48 cm, measured to the seat surface. A standard dining table is 75 cm high, leaving about 27 cm between the seat and the tabletop. All Stressless dining chairs have a seat height of 48 cm. If you’re taller than average, be sure to measure carefully: you’ll often be more comfortable with a slightly taller chair and table.

Do Stressless dining chairs swivel?

Yes. Each of the four models (Mint, Laurel, Bay, and Vanilla) can be mounted on the D350 swivel base, which rotates 360 degrees. By default, the chair does not automatically return to its starting position. If you want it to always return to its starting position, select the auto-return option for an additional charge of approximately 70 euros per chair.

What is the difference between a high and a low backrest?

A high backrest provides greater seating comfort because it supports your back higher up during long, leisurely meals. A low backrest is less conspicuous, has a more minimalist look, and keeps the view unobstructed in an open living space. The Mint, Laurel, and Vanilla models are available with both high and low backs; the Bay model is available only with a low back.

Will dining chairs with armrests fit under my table?

They do fit under a standard dining table. A dining table is usually 74 to 75 cm high, while the armrests of a Stressless dining chair are no more than 69 to 70 cm high. So they slide under any standard table. Be careful with built-in desks or work tables: these are often only 70 cm high, and the armrests won’t fit underneath them.

Leather or fabric: which is the best choice when you have kids?

Our consultants recommend leather for households with (grand)children, specifically Paloma or Velaro. Both are durable and easy to clean with a damp cloth. The condition is that you must treat the leather at least twice a year with a Stressless care kit. If you have cats or dogs, keep in mind that leather is more susceptible to scratches from claws.

How much space do I need per dining chair?

You receive a 2-year statutory warranty. In addition, Stressless provides a 10-year warranty on the internal metal frame, including the springs and the glide system. Normal wear and tear, improper maintenance, and accidental damage are not covered by the warranty. Repairs are performed by our own team.

Can I come by to try out the dining room chairs, and do I need to make an appointment?

You’re welcome to stop by our locations in Leuven or Antwerp at any time, with or without an appointment. However, making an appointment is more convenient: that way, we’ll set aside time for you and provide personalized assistance, even when it’s busy. This way, you can try out the different models and see for yourself the difference between a swivel chair and a fixed chair.

Can Stressless dining chairs also be used as office chairs?

Yes. The Mint, Laurel, Bay, and Vanilla models are also available as home office chairs, featuring a star-shaped base with five wheels that swivels 360 degrees. It’s best not to place them on carpet, as this creates too much resistance for them to roll smoothly.
