Stressless® Adam · Red Dot Award 2025
Stressless® Adam — the electric recliner with Zero Gravity
The Stressless® Adam is the first Stressless chair to be designed from the ground up as a fully electric model. With the push of a button, it reclines into the Zero Gravity position, with your legs positioned just above your heart—for an almost weightless sensation. Wooden side panels, an integrated footrest, and Norwegian craftsmanship round out the design.

What makes the Stressless® Adam special?
Relaxation without having to do anything yourself
Whereas with a classic Stressless you have to move yourself, the Adam does the work for you. Built-in motors, a smart headrest, and a seat that seems to embrace you: everything is designed to help your body relax completely.

The Zero Gravity Mode
The engine tilts the Adam so that your legs are just above your heart—a little further back than in the classic models. This takes the strain off your back and gives you an almost weightless feeling.

A headrest that thinks for itself
When you lean back, the headrest automatically tilts forward. This allows you to watch TV or read even while lying down, without straining your neck. For taller people, it extends up to 6 cm.

The Cuddle Effect
A bucket-style seat with soft, wing-shaped side cushions and wooden panels on the outside. It feels as if the armchair wraps warmly around you.
Adam or a classic Stressless?
Not better or worse—just sitting differently
The Adam is intentionally designed differently from a Stressless with a Signature or Cross base. With those classic models, you adjust the chair using your own body weight and rest your feet on a separate footstool. The Adam is electric and has a built-in footrest. Which one suits you best depends on how you prefer to relax—there’s something for everyone.
| Stressless® Adam | Classic Stressless (Signature / Cross) | |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust | Fully electric — the backrest and footrest each have their own motor | Using your body weight, without levers (Glide-system™) |
| Footrest | Integrated, fits seamlessly into the seat | Separate footstool (or without) |
| Lie Position | Zero Gravity: legs just above the heart | Half-reclining, feet on the footstool |
| Exercise | Stable and quiet; the engines do the work | Gentle rocking with BalanceAdapt™ |
| Seat Height | 51 cm — easy to get up | Lower, depending on the model and size |
| Sizes | One universal size | Usually S, M, and L |
| Electricity | Power cord or optional battery | Not necessary |
| Goes well with | Anyone who wants to relax as much as possible without having to do anything themselves | Anyone who likes to move along actively in a compact armchair |

Zero Gravity Explained
What does the Zero Gravity mode do to your body?
In Zero Gravity mode—also known as the heart-level position—the seat tilts backward, raising your feet and legs slightly higher than your heart. Your body weight is distributed evenly across the seat and backrest, so that no single point bears any extra strain.
What you'll notice about that:
- The pressure on your spine and lower back is noticeably reduced, allowing your muscles to relax completely;
- Your heart doesn't have to work as hard against gravity to pump blood back up from your legs;
- Tired or heavy legs feel lighter more quickly.
The Adam is a piece of comfort furniture, not a medical device. If you have specific health issues, please consult your doctor or physical therapist.

Operation & Power
Is a fully electric recliner easy to operate?
Yes. Forget about levers or leaning back with your weight: hidden beneath the soft upholstery are whisper-quiet motors that give you complete control. The backrest and footrest move independently of each other, smoothly and without jolts—you stop exactly where it feels right for you.
The remote control snaps into place magnetically under the armrest: always within reach, never in plain sight, and it won't slip between the cushions.

| Position | How you'll notice it |
|---|---|
| Two independent motors | Feet up but back straight while reading? Or leaning all the way back? You can adjust it down to the millimeter. |
| Zero Gravity button | With a single press, you go directly to the heart balance position. |
| Home button | Returns the armchair to its compact, upright starting position—which makes it easier to stand up. |
| Light-up buttons | A brief touch activates the lighting; only then does the control respond. This prevents the chair from moving accidentally. |
| Plus™ System | The headrest tilts forward automatically when you lean back, so your line of sight remains straight ahead. |
| Plugged in or battery-powered | Comes standard with a power cord. With the optional rechargeable battery (€304), you can place the Adam anywhere without a cord running across the floor; you can charge it overnight, for example. |

Seat height: 51 cm
Why does the Adam's seat height make such a difference?
Most classic recliners have a low seat. That feels cozy, but it isn't always ideal from an ergonomic standpoint. The Adam is 51 cm high as standard—a small difference you'll notice every day.
Stand up and sit down effortlessly. Your knees and hips are at a more natural angle, so you need less muscle strength and can stand up smoothly.
The right height right away. With traditional models, you sometimes need a separate riser ring to achieve that height. With the Adam, it’s elegantly integrated into the design.
Reduces strain on your back and knees. Because you start from a higher position, you don't have to push your body up—which is great for anyone who just wants to sit comfortably after a long day.
Design & Chassis
What's different about the Adam's design?
The Adam clearly breaks with the traditional Stressless look. While classic models are fully upholstered, the Adam features wooden panels on the sides of the seat —giving it an architectural, “shell-like” appearance.
The footrest is also different: on earlier LegComfort models, it folded out from under the seat, leaving a gap between the seat and the footrest. On the Adam, it curls up as a single continuous unit and retracts the footrest compactly into the seat.
It isn't built on the familiar Classic or Signature base, but on two bases designed specifically for the Adam. You can choose the wood from eight standard colors or three Exclusive Wood shades in solid oak.

Disc
Round wooden disc base in the same wood color as the armrests.

Sirius
Slim aluminum star base, brushed or matte black.
Both stands have the same price and the same features.

Upholstery & Maintenance
Leather or fabric: Which upholstery should you choose?
The leather is high-quality cowhide available in four quality grades: Batick, which is durable and easy to maintain; Paloma, which is soft and natural; Velaro, which is thick and luxurious; and Noblesse, an exclusive semi-aniline leather.
When you choose your fabric, you'll find dozens of colors and textures: from wool (Calido) and bouclé (Marigold) to velour (Magnolia) and the suede-like microfiber Dinamica. All fabrics have been tested for durability.
Official Stressless® care kits are available for leather and fabric. Regular care will keep your Adam looking great for years to come.
Red Dot Award: Product Design 2025
Why did the Stressless® Adam win the Red Dot Award?
The Adam was launched in 2025 and won the Red Dot Award in the Product Design category that same year. This international award, which has been around since 1955, is considered one of the most prestigious seals of quality in the design world. An independent panel of experts evaluates thousands of entries based on function, aesthetics, ease of use, and sustainability.
The Adam stood out for its seamless integration of technology—the motors and footrest are concealed within the wooden shell—the Zero Gravity reclining function, and the careful blend of wood, leather or fabric, and metal. Proof that a fully electric recliner doesn’t have to be clunky.
“Although the Stressless Adam clearly focuses on comfort, its Scandinavian-inspired design creates a harmonious look.”Red Dot Award 2025 Jury · Design: Chyba and Partners for Ekornes

Who is this for?
Who is the Stressless® Adam suitable for?
The Adam is perfect for anyone seeking the ultimate in electric relaxation: stretching out in the Zero Gravity position without having to do a thing. Thanks to its one-button control and higher seat height, it’s also comfortable for those who prefer not to adjust the recline manually or who want to get up more easily.
Would you prefer a more active reclining experience, or are you looking for a smaller or larger size? Then compare it with the Stressless® Paul or the Stressless® Ruby.

Dimensions
Dimensions of the Adam — and why there's only one size
The Adam is intentionally available in a single universal size. Manufacturing the fixed wooden shell in three sizes would make the production process extremely complex, and the compact mechanism that allows the footrest to connect seamlessly to the seat was designed specifically for this size. Because the backrest, headrest, and footrest are infinitely adjustable, you can still adjust the reclining and sitting angles to suit your own height.
| Implementation | Width | Height | Depth (upright / extended) | Seat Height | Seat Depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stressless® Adam Disc | 86 | 110–116 | 87 / 167 | 51 | 50 |
| Stressless® Adam Sirius | 86 | 110–116 | 87 / 167 | 51 | 50 |
Dimensions in cm according to the Stressless price list 2026 (seat depth according to Stressless); they may vary slightly. The height increases when the headrest is extended (+6 cm). Allow space for the extended depth of 167 cm.

Made in Norway
How long does a Stressless® Adam last?
Under normal household use, a Stressless lasts an average of 15 to 20 years. With an electric recliner, it’s best to consider three components: the steel frame and wooden shell are built to last for decades; the motors and electronics are industrial-grade and may show signs of wear—often only after 10 to 15 years—but can be replaced individually through the Stressless service; and the upholstery depends largely on how well you maintain it.
Feel free to do the math: an Adam starting at €3,419 will cost about €228 per year over 15 years.
Warranty on the mechanism
On the internal mechanism, the Plus™ system, and the metal frame with springs—in addition to the 2-year legal warranty.
Warranty on the motors
On the motors and all electrical components; the battery is covered for 2 years. Learn more about repairs.
Custom-made in Norway
Your Adam will be made after you place your order and then delivered to you free of charge in Belgium or the Netherlands.

Frequently Asked Questions
All About the Stressless® Adam
What is the Stressless® Adam?
The Stressless® Adam is a fully electric recliner from the Norwegian brand Stressless featuring a Zero Gravity position: with the push of a button, it reclines until your legs are slightly higher than your heart. The footrest is integrated into the seat, the seat shell has wooden side panels, and it stands on a Disc or Sirius base. In 2025, it won the Red Dot Award for product design.
What does "Zero Gravity" mean for the Stressless® Adam?
Zero Gravity is the reclining position in which your feet and legs are positioned slightly higher than your heart; it’s also known as the “heart-level” position. Your body weight is then evenly distributed across the seat and backrest, reducing pressure on your lower back and giving you an almost weightless feeling. The Adam reclines slightly further back than the classic Stressless models, thanks to its motor.
What is the difference between the Stressless® Adam and a Stressless with a Signature or Cross base?
It’s mainly a different kind of seating experience—neither better nor worse. A Signature or Cross model is adjusted using your own body weight and features a separate footrest; you can choose from three sizes. The Adam is fully electric, has a seamlessly integrated footrest, a Zero Gravity recline position, a higher seat height of 51 cm, and comes in one universal size. Those who like to actively move along with the chair often choose a classic Stressless; those who want to relax as much as possible without having to do anything themselves choose the Adam.
Is the Stressless® Adam the first electric Stressless?
It wasn’t the first to feature a motor—there were already “Power” versions of classic models, and earlier models like the Stressless Sam and Scott—but it was the first to be conceived from the outset as a fully electric recliner, and the first with a Zero Gravity position. It has since become one of the top sellers in the Stressless line worldwide.
How do you operate the Stressless® Adam?
It comes with a remote control that snaps into place magnetically under the armrest. The backrest and footrest each have their own whisper-quiet motor and move smoothly and independently of each other. Press a single button to go to the Zero Gravity position, and the Home button returns you to the upright starting position. To prevent accidental movement, the buttons light up briefly after a light touch.
Do I need an electrical outlet for the Stressless® Adam?
The Adam comes standard with a power cord that you can hide behind or under the seat. If you want to place it anywhere in the room, choose the optional rechargeable battery (€304 special price). In our experience, it lasts several weeks with normal use; you can charge it overnight, for example.
Why does the Stressless® Adam have a seat height of 51 cm?
Because standing up and sitting down are so much easier. Your knees and hips are at a more natural angle, so you need less muscle strength to stand up. With traditional models, you often have to use a separate riser ring to achieve that height; with the Adam, it’s built right into the design.
Why is the Stressless® Adam available in only one size?
Thanks to the solid wooden frame and the compact motor mechanism that allows the footrest to fit seamlessly against the seat—both of which were designed specifically for this size. Because the backrest, headrest, and footrest are infinitely adjustable, and the headrest extends up to 6 cm, you can still customize the reclining position to suit your own height. We therefore highly recommend trying it out before you buy.
What is the difference between the Disc and Sirius frames?
Disc is a round wooden disc base in the same wood color as the armrests; Sirius is a sleek aluminum star base, available in brushed or matte black. Comfort and features are identical, as is the price. It’s purely a matter of style: Disc has a warm and calm look, while Sirius has a lighter and more modern feel.
What wood finishes are available for the Stressless® Adam?
Eleven in total: the eight standard wood finishes in laminated beech (oak, teak, walnut, brown, smoked oak, gray, wenge, and black) and three Exclusive Wood finishes in solid oak (Oak Natural, Oak Whitewash, and Oak Black), which are available exclusively in the Adam and Stressless Dining collections.
How much does a Stressless® Adam cost?
Online, you pay the Stressless Store promotional price: from €3,419 for Group 1 fabric to €5,300 for Noblesse leather, each 10% below the suggested retail price (starting at €3,799). The Disc and Sirius models cost the same. The optional battery is sold separately. Because every Adam is custom-made in Norway, the delivery time is approximately 8 weeks; delivery is free in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Has the Stressless® Adam won a design award?
Yes. The Stressless® Adam won the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2025. The international jury wrote: “Although the Stressless Adam clearly focuses on comfort, its Scandinavian-inspired design creates a harmonious look.” The design is by the Italian studio Chyba and Partners, commissioned by Ekornes.
How long does a Stressless® Adam last, and what warranty do I get?
Under normal household use, a Stressless will last 15 to 20 years. You receive a 10-year warranty on the internal mechanism and metal frame, a 5-year warranty on the motors and electrical components, and a 2-year warranty on the battery, in addition to the 2-year statutory warranty. Motors, buttons, and cables can be replaced separately at a later date.
Can I try out the Stressless® Adam?
Absolutely, and that’s something we highly recommend for the Adam: since it comes in one size, it’s best to see for yourself whether the seat height and backrest suit your build. At the Stressless Stores in Leuven and Antwerp, you can test it out for free, try the Zero Gravity position, and view all the samples.
