What makes the Stressless® Tokyo special?
The look of a designer chair, the comfort of a Stressless
The Tokyo stands out for its sleek, modern silhouette. The slim frame is topped with a soft, padded cushion, and the clean side lines contrast with the rounded shapes of the armrests.

Ultra-slim backrest
The back has a strikingly thin, streamlined profile. As a result, the Tokyo takes up much less visual space.

Quilted pillow
Deep, horizontal stitching holds the soft filling in place and gives the pillow its inviting, undulating texture.

Headrest of your choice
Choose a high-back seat with an adjustable neck cushion or a low-back seat with a headrest that slides up to 10 cm in height.
Urban Collection
Why does the Tokyo look different from a classic Stressless?
The Tokyo is part of the Stressless Urban collection: models named after cities—such as Tokyo, Berlin, and London—and inspired by the sleek design of the mid-20th century.
- Industrial touch — they contrast beautifully with poured floors, brick, or concrete.
- Slim metal legs —instead of a round wooden base, a star-shaped or cross-shaped base in chrome or matte black, for an airy look.
- More compact design — ideal for a city apartment or loft.

Three back versions
High back, adjustable headrest, or low back?
The backrest determines both the silhouette and the support. The price is the same for every version.

High back
Tapered elegantly toward the top, with an adjustable neck pillow: support for the entire back.

Adjustable headrest
A horizontal cushion that floats above the back like an architectural element and is adjustable up to 10 cm in height.

Lower Back
Cubist and compact — keeps sightlines unobstructed in an open space or near large windows.

Base & Height
Star, Cross, or Home Office?
The Urban bases make the armchair appear to float above the floor. The Star and Cross bases swivel 360° and feature the rocking BalanceAdapt™ motion; choose them in polished chrome for a glossy, retro-modern accent, or in matte black for a understated, industrial look.
Both are also available with a high base: this increases the seat height and the overall height by 4 cm, making it easier for taller people to stand up—at the same price.
With Home Office, the Tokyo stands on wheels and features a gas spring for seat height adjustment: your recliner becomes an office chair.

Star
Five slim, angular spokes. BalanceAdapt™. Chrome or matte black.

Cross
Four rounded legs. BalanceAdapt™. Chrome or matte black.

Home Office
On casters, height-adjustable with a gas spring. Chrome.
Features & Comfort Technology
Are all the Stressless comfort features included?
Yes. Despite its sleek design, it features all of the patented technologies—they’ve been made more compact and seamlessly integrated into the frame. The Tokyo offers medium-firm to enveloping seating comfort with active support.
Underneath the upholstery is a layered construction: a steel frame with flex springs, directly molded cold foam with ComfortZones™, and a soft top layer of foam and polyester fiber. This creates the subtle pleats and the soft feel the moment you sit down.

| Characteristic | How you'll notice it |
|---|---|
| Plus™ System | The headrest and lumbar support move in sync. When you lean back, your lower back remains supported and your line of sight stays horizontal—which is handy for reading or watching TV. |
| BalanceAdapt™ | The seating area responds to slight shifts in your weight, creating a gentle rocking sensation. Available on the Star and Cross models, but not on the Home Office model. |
| Glide-system™ | You adjust the position using your own body weight, without any levers. |
| ComfortZones™ | Cutouts in the foam allow the seat and shoulder blades to sink in slightly deeper; the foam remains firmer around the lower back. The rear portion of the seat gives more, so your thighs are well supported without pressure in the back of your knees. |
| Adjustable headrest | Adjustable up to 10 cm in height (low back with headrest) or an adjustable neck cushion (high back). |
| Footstool | The separate footrest tilts along with the angle of your legs and positions you at the right distance. |
One size, tailored to your height
How do you choose the right Tokyo?
Classic models such as the Consul or Mayfair are available in S, M, and L. The Tokyo comes in one width and depth (Medium): you can adjust it to fit your body by selecting the backrest version and the height of the base. During the test sit, our advisors check four things:
- Feet flat on the ground —when standing upright, the soles of your feet should be completely flat on the floor. If not, the high base is for you.
- Space behind the knee — there should be a space about the width of a little finger between the edge of the seat and the back of your knee.
- Neck support at ear level — the headrest cushion fits into the curve of your neck.
- Lower-back support — you can feel the chair gently supporting your lower back as soon as you lean back.

Upholstery
Leather or fabric for your Tokyo?
The choice depends on your interior design style, how often you use the armchair, and what kind of feel you prefer. Because the Tokyo has a soft top layer, the material also affects how you experience the “cocoon effect.”
Take care of your Tokyo with the official Stressless® care kits for leather or fabric.
| Property | Leather | Fabric |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Highlights the clean mid-century lines and deep stitching. | A softer, warmer Scandinavian atmosphere. |
| Seating Comfort | It feels a little cooler at first, but quickly warms up to your body temperature. | It feels cozy and warm right away. |
| Maintenance | Easy to clean and develops a beautiful patina. Care for it using the leather care kit. | Requires extra protection against stains and moisture; modern yarns are durable. Care for it using the fabric care kit. |
| Creasing | Supple leather enhances the natural, soft ripples. | It often remains slightly tighter and more evenly tensioned. |

Who is this for?
Who is the Stressless® Tokyo suitable for?
The Tokyo is perfect for anyone looking for a modern, sleek recliner that doesn’t look too bulky in their interior. Thanks to its three backrest options, high base, and adjustable headrest, it’s suitable for a wide range of heights and sitting positions—and, with the Home Office version, it’s also ideal for those who work from home.

Frequently Asked Questions
All About the Stressless® Tokyo
Who is the Stressless® Tokyo best suited for?
The Stressless® Tokyo is especially well-suited for those looking for a modern, sleek recliner that doesn’t look too bulky but still offers the full Stressless comfort. With options including a high back, a low back with an adjustable headrest, or a low back and two base heights, it accommodates a variety of body heights.
Why does the Tokyo look different from the classic Stressless models?
The Tokyo is part of the Stressless Urban collection: models named after cities, such as Tokyo, Berlin, and London, featuring a sleeker, mid-century-inspired design. Instead of a round wooden base, they stand on a slender metal star base or cross base, available in chrome or matte black.
What body styles are available for the Tokyo?
There are three versions: a high-back model that tapers toward the bottom, with an adjustable neck cushion; a low-back model with a headrest that adjusts up to 10 cm in height; and a low-back model without a headrest, which is compact and cubist in design. Each version is also available as a Home Office model on casters.
What size Tokyo do I need?
The Tokyo comes in one size (Medium): 80 cm wide. You can adjust it to your height by choosing the backrest version and the base height—standard or the high base, which raises the seat height and the overall height by 4 cm. During the test sit, we’ll check to make sure your feet are flat on the floor, there’s enough space behind your knees, and the headrest—positioned at ear level—supports your neck.
What is the difference between the Star and Cross frames?
The Star base has five slender, flat spokes that taper at an angle—a distinct mid-century design. The Cross base has four legs with rounded profiles that complement the rounded armrests. Both swivel 360°, feature the rocking BalanceAdapt™ motion, and are available in polished chrome or matte black, in standard or tall versions.
Does the Stressless® Tokyo have the same comfort features as the classic models?
Yes. The design is sleeker, but all the patented technologies are still there: the Plus™ system, BalanceAdapt™ (on the Star and Cross models), the Glide-system™, and cold foam with ComfortZones™. They’ve been made more compact and are seamlessly integrated into the frame.
Does BalanceAdapt™ also work at the Tokyo Home Office?
No. The Home Office version has casters and a gas spring to adjust the seat height; it doesn't include the rocking BalanceAdapt™ mechanism. It does, however, include the Glide-system™, so you can lean back a bit even while sitting at your desk.
Is the Tokyo firm or soft?
Medium-firm to supple and enveloping. Despite its slim design, it doesn’t feel hard: beneath the upholstery is a soft top layer of foam and polyester fiber resting on top of the cold foam with ComfortZones™. Slight creases in the upholstery are part of its soft character.
Should I choose leather or fabric for the Tokyo?
Leather accentuates the clean lines and deep stitching, and develops a beautiful patina over time. Fabric creates a softer, warmer atmosphere and feels instantly cozy. Both are available in all colors from the Stressless collection; you can feel all the fabric samples in our showroom.
How much does a Stressless® Tokyo cost, and what is the delivery time?
The suggested retail price is the same for every backrest version: €2,689 with a footstool in fabric group 1. During the big Stressless promotion (through November 22), you’ll pay 15% less than the suggested retail price online: starting at €1,937 without a footstool, €2,286 with a footstool, and up to €3,535 in Noblesse leather; the Home Office model starts at €2,065. Because every Tokyo is custom-made in Norway, the delivery time is approximately 8 weeks; delivery is free in Belgium and the Netherlands.
What warranty do I get with a Stressless® Tokyo?
You get a 10-year warranty on the internal mechanism: the Plus™ system, BalanceAdapt™, and the metal frame with springs. In addition, you have the 2-year statutory warranty.
Can I try out the Stressless® Tokyo?
Absolutely. At the Stressless Stores in Leuven and Antwerp, you can try out the Tokyo for free, compare the different backrest options and bases, and view all the leather and fabric samples. Our consultants will help you choose the right backrest and height.
