A recliner lasts an average of 15 to 30 years, and that range is determined almost entirely by the price segment. An entry-level model rarely lasts more than 7 years, while a top-of-the-line recliner lasts 20 to 25 years with normal use. The difference isn’t in the design, but in what’s inside.

Why does an 800-euro chair last less time than a 3,000-euro chair?

Because the raw materials are of a simpler quality. Popular foams are used in all kinds of chairs because they are cost-effective, and the same applies to fabrics and (faux) leather. You’ll find the same materials used by various major brands, because many manufacturers source their foam and fabric from the same main supplier. Only a few manufacturers produce everything in-house, and that’s precisely what ensures consistent quality.

What is the difference between "broken" and "worn out"?

"Broken" means you can no longer sit in the recliner: the part is no longer functioning properly. "Worn out" means you can still sit in it, but you’ll experience minor issues, such as squeaking, reduced comfort, or a recliner that looks less appealing. With inexpensive recliners, in practice, the foam or the mechanism is usually the first to fail.

What determines the lifespan of a chair?

Six factors together determine how long a chair will last: the frame, the padding, the mechanism, the upholstery, how you use it, and how you maintain it. You buy the first four once, and they’re set from then on. The last two are up to you, and they can easily make a difference of several years.

1. The frame

The frame supports everything and determines whether a chair will still hold its shape after twenty years. Particleboard and glued laminated panels are the weakest link: they can sag, and the joints can come loose. Solid wood performs better, but it can start to creak. A cold-formed steel frame retains its shape for decades and is the only one you can confidently guarantee will last twenty years.

2. The foam and the filling

Cold-cured foam is foam that is poured into a mold rather than cut from a block, and it retains its resilience much longer than standard polyether foam. Cheap foam has a lower density: the air cells become permanently deformed under your weight, and that’s exactly what you feel when a sofa sags after a few years. Sagged foam does not recover on its own.

3. The Mechanism

A recliner goes through thousands of movements each year: every time you lean back and sit up straight again, that’s one full cycle. A stamped mechanism made of thin sheet steel develops play over time; a welded or integrated mechanism distributes the forces across the entire frame. The fewer loose parts, rivets, and screws, the less play and metal fatigue there will be after years of use.

4. The upholstery

Fabric and leather are equally durable, provided that the leather is properly maintained. The notion that leather always wins is therefore incorrect: untreated leather dries out, loses its suppleness, and begins to peel, while a fabric with high abrasion resistance will easily last for decades. For fabrics, the Martindale rating is the benchmark; above 100,000 cycles, we consider the upholstery fabric to be suitable for heavy-duty use.

5. Use

The number of hours per day, the user’s weight, direct sunlight, pets, and the sofa’s location in the room all determine how quickly a sofa wears out. A sofa next to a radiator or fireplace will dry out, and a sofa in direct sunlight will fade. That same sofa, placed three meters away, will last years longer—without you having to do anything differently.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance is the most cost-effective way to extend the life of your furniture. Leather that is conditioned once or a few times a year retains its suppleness and color; leather that is never treated absorbs moisture and sweat, which accelerates the entire deterioration process. Why a Stressless Lasts Longer Than the Average Sofa

What is the internal structure of a Stressless?

A Stressless is built around an ergonomic frame made of cold-bent steel tubes with wave-shaped springs that follow the contours of the spine. Comfort-Zones cold-cure foam is molded directly into a mold around that frame, ensuring that the filling cannot shift. Perforated air channels in the foam provide ventilation, and a top layer of polyester wadding enhances comfort. The wooden bases consist of thirty-two layers of European beech wood pressed under high pressure.

The Plus™ system automatically and entirely mechanically adjusts the lumbar and headrests as soon as you lean back, ensuring that your neck and back are always supported. With the Glide™ system, the seat responds to your body weight: after a one-time adjustment of the rotary knobs, it tilts smoothly with every movement. A system that moves with you wears out more slowly than a traditional hinge. Whereas a hinge absorbs all the stress at a single point, Stressless distributes the forces across the entire steel inner frame. The Glide system operates using gravity and natural glide paths, so there are no levers or hard brakes that work against the mechanism. How rigorous are the tests on a Stressless?

The components under the heaviest load are the steel inner frame and the Plus™ system integrated into it: with every movement, they absorb the full peak load of your body weight. Ekornes tests these components at its factory in Norway using hydraulic robots, with a single cycle simulating the entire process of leaning back forcefully into the reclining position and back again. The metal structure and the Plus™ system undergo a fatigue test of 150,000 to 300,000 cycles under a constant load that simulates a user weight of up to 130 kg.

What does the Stressless warranty cover, and for how long?

In addition to the 2-year statutory warranty, Ekornes offers a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty on the internal mechanism. That’s the clearest indication of the expected lifespan: a manufacturer wouldn’t offer a 10-year warranty on parts that it expects to fail within that period.

Let’s be clear about what is not covered by that ten-year warranty: the upholstery materials. Leather, fabric, and wood are wear-and-tear items and are covered by the statutory warranty, not the mechanism warranty. Damage caused by improper repairs or the use of non-genuine parts is also excluded from coverage. You can easily register your warranty with your receipt, so be sure to keep it.

Stressless specifies a maximum user weight of 130 kg. That figure isn’t just a random number—it’s the load at which the mechanisms have been tested. If you consistently exceed that limit, we’ll discuss it with you in advance and work together to find a model or configuration that’s designed to handle it. Maintenance: How to Keep Your Sofa Looking Great for Decades

Maintenance is the only factor that will help you extend the life of your furniture by years. The rule of thumb: treat all upholstery at least once a year, and more delicate leather twice a year or more. If your sofa is in direct sunlight, next to a fireplace, or in a dry, warm room, do this every quarter.

Does the care vary depending on the type of leather?

Yes. From least to most maintenance-intensive: Batick, Paloma, Velaro, and Noblesse. Batick is the most treated leather and therefore the most forgiving. Noblesse is the least treated leather: it feels the best, but requires the most care. How often should leather be conditioned?

Preferably twice a year, using a leather care kit. It contains a liquid that nourishes the leather and a cloth for applying it. If you never do this, the leather will lose its suppleness and softness, become worn, and fade. Furthermore, untreated leather absorbs other liquids, such as sweat, which accelerates the entire deterioration process. For fabric upholstery, there is a separate fabric care kit.

What are the most common maintenance mistakes?

• Place the chair in direct sunlight.
• Using the wrong cleaning products.
• Place the chair near a fireplace or radiator.
• But above all: don't do any maintenance at all.

You don't need to do anything to the mechanism itself. No lubrication, no tightening: the mechanism is the last part of a Stressless to fail.

Wear and tear, repairs, and replacement parts after 10 or 20 years

The turnaround time depends heavily on the nature of the repair: sometimes it’s fixed right away, sometimes it takes a few days, and sometimes a few weeks. How much does a Stressless cost per year?

Over 24 years, a Stressless costs about the same per year as a cheap sofa that you’ll replace three times: 192 euros versus 183 euros. That difference of nine euros per year is the price of 24 years of comfortable seating instead of 24 years of starting over three times.

Here’s a sample calculation: A typical two-seater sofa with a long seat costs 1,180 euros and lasts 8 years, without an adjustable or movable seat, featuring standard fabric and standard foam. A Stressless Stella in the same configuration costs 4,999 euros and lasts 25 years, featuring an adjustable and movable seat and a fabric tested for over 100,000 Martindale cycles. In simple terms, that’s 147 euros per year versus 198 euros per year. But that doesn’t take into account the time value of money: money today is worth more than money tomorrow. Factor in 2% inflation and a 50-euro disposal fee per sofa, and the picture changes completely.

What people also forget to factor in isn’t financial: three delivery appointments, three times rearranging your living room, three times the hassle of choosing, and three times having to get an old sofa out of the house. Upon delivery, we’ll take your old sofa with us for 75 euros. And a Stressless still has resale value even after years of use: on the secondhand market, it fetches an average of 500 to 1,000 euros, depending on the number of seats, its condition, and the features. An average sofa is worth nothing after eight years.

When is it time for a new sofa?

The time has come when you can no longer sit comfortably: when the seat has sagged and you can no longer find a comfortable sitting position. A second sign is upholstery that is starting to wear away, exposing the foam, although the latter is often the result of insufficient maintenance rather than age.

Whether repair is cheaper than replacement depends entirely on the damage. Replacing a worn-out part in an otherwise sound chair is almost always worth it; a chair whose structure itself is worn out is not.
